Program Overview

Program Description:
This is a flexible musicology programme for graduates of any discipline with an interest in, and aptitude for, music. There are taught modules in all the areas of musicology in which we are particularly strong, and it is possible to construct a programme with a high degree of specialisation. Practical and/or creative modules may also be available if you are suitably qualified. The MA provides an excellent foundation for students going on to a research degree and it is also a valuable qualification in its own right.

MA students take general and music-specific research training modules (30 credits); taught modules (90 credits); and a dissertation (60 credits). Diploma students follow a similar programme but do not undertake a dissertation.

Taught modules are typically drawn from: studying popular musics; cultural theories of music; music and historiography; studying world musics; advanced musical analysis and a range of specific topics in cultural and historical studies. It is also possible to take modules from the MMus programme and from other disciplines in the University.
