Program Overview

Program Description:
This programme is designed to help you develop a comprehensive understanding of the theory and practice of museology. It offers a fast-track route to a professional qualification and is amongst the most successful museum studies programmes in the UK. Each module is taught intensively during a one-week period so that access to the programme is easier for part-time students and museum professionals. (See also the work-based MMPrac.)You take three compulsory modules (60 credits) in: issues and ideas; management; communication and interpretation. You then complete a 20-credit module in collections management before selecting a 20-credit specialist option covering the theory and practice of a specific area of museology. The specialised modules correspond to curatorial disciplines found in many museums, and include: archaeology; social history; natural sciences; and interpretation and exhibitions. All include a practical project, often working closely with museum professionals in museums in the North East. There is an eight-week placement in a museum (20 credits) and finally a piece of individual research for presentation as a 15û18,000-word dissertation (60 credits). If you do not complete a dissertation you may be awarded a Diploma.Teaching emphasises a practical approach, dealing with real objects, museums and situations.
