It is designed for applicants who have studied materials science or materials engineering as part of an undergraduate degree in engineering and want to pursue their studies of materials-related topics to a higher level.
The one-year programme includes a major research element in the form of a dissertation (60 credits). The remaining 120 credits are allocated to taught modules, which include: advanced materials and processes; tribology and materials design; stress analysis; joining technology; lifetime prediction and design for reliability; manufacturing technology; business and environmental management; innovation and technology management; design for environmental predication.
The two-year programme is designed for candidates (especially from overseas) who require extra English tuition, or who need further training in other key background skills. You take a preparatory year comprising English language and other relevant introductory modules, plus engineering modules in materials and fabrication, nanomaterials, sustainable industry and integrated design. You then continue into the second year and take the one-year version of the programme as described above.
