Program Description:

This programme enables students to widen their mechanical engineering knowledge and skills by undertaking in-depth studies in their chosen areas of interest. The programme also aims to produce MasterÆs-level graduates who are able to contribute effectively in a wide range of mechanical engineering environments.

You take a selection of taught modules (120 credits) and complete an individual project in mechanical and systems engineering (60 credits). Compulsory modules include: methods in industrial research and development; joining technology; continuum mechanics; bioengineering; design of mechanical power transmissions; thermal power and propulsive systems; dynamics and control. If your first language is not English you will normally be required to complete a module in writing dissertations in science and engineering (10 credits).

You also select 20û30 credits of optional modules. These include: computational fluid dynamics; numerical methods with applications; the finite element method; optimisation; automatic control; robotics; partial differential equations; environmental modelling; soil modelling and numerical methods. There is wide scope in the choice of topics for individual projects, and there are often opportunities for project work to be undertaken in collaboration with industry.

The taught component of the programme makes use of a combination of lectures, tutorials and seminars, and assessment is by written examination and in-course assessed work. The project is assessed by dissertation.
