Program Overview

Program Description:
This programme is designed to provide advanced training in modern drug chemistry. You gain: an appreciation of how new drugs are developed, from their conception in the laboratory to their application, testing and subsequent industrial production; an overview of the chemistry pertinent to drug design, as practised in the pharmaceutical industry and in academia; training in topics which constitute the æholy grailÆ of drug design and potential therapies not yet established commercially; a high level of research competence; and experience through training in relevant aspects of laboratory work, including COSHH and safety.

The main focus of the programme is the exploration of new drugs from their conception in the laboratory to their application and testing and subsequent industrial production. The programme consists of taught elements (90 credits) and a research project and dissertation (90 credits). The main themes include: current theory/practice in chemotherapy; organic synthesis for drug targets; modern methods in drug discovery; hostûguest chemistry; drug metabolism and toxicology. Additional topics include data processing and presentation, and technology transfer.

We are an ideal setting for this programme as our research strengths lie in pharmaceutical areas and we have strong links with research groups in the pharmaceutical industry and Newcastle Medical School (for example, the Northern Institute for Cancer Research and the School of Biomedical Sciences).
