Program Overview

Program Description:

This innovative programme enables you to develop your own creative writing, teach writing or go on to further study of creative writing or literature.At the centre of the MA are the writing workshops in prose, poetry or scriptwriting (60 credits) through which, together with individual consultations, you are helped to develop your own writing. Optional workshops are offered on topics including writing for children and poetry and public art. You also study the activities of publishers, the process of editing and literary readings (20 credits), and research training modules (20 credits).

These practice-based modules are complemented by two more academic modules from a list that might include: the short story; twentieth-century American women poets; post-war American poetry; postcolonial fiction (20 credits). You may either submit a portfolio of your own work or write a dissertation on an appropriate literary topic (60 credits).

The MA draws upon its strong links to the vibrant literary culture of the North East, and to organisations such as Northern Stage, Seven Stories û The Centre for ChildrenÆs Books, New Writing North and Bloodaxe Books. Practice-based workshops are taught by established writers, including W N Herbert, Jackie Kay, Jack Mapanje, Sean OÆBrien, Jo Shapcott, Colin Teevan and Margaret Wilkinson.
