Optional workshops are offered on topics including writing for children and poetry and public art. You also study the activities of publishers, the process of editing and literary readings (20 credits), and research training modules (20 credits).

These practice-based modules are complemented by two more academic modules from a list that might include: the short story; twentieth-century American women poets; post-war American poetry; postcolonial fiction (20 credits). You may either submit a portfolio of your own work or write a dissertation on an appropriate literary topic (60 credits).

The MA draws upon its strong links to the vibrant literary culture of the North East, and to organisations such as Northern Stage, Seven Stories û The Centre for ChildrenÆs Books, New Writing North and Bloodaxe Books. Practice-based workshops are taught by established writers, including W N Herbert, Jackie Kay, Jack Mapanje, Sean OÆBrien, Jo Shapcott, Colin Teevan and Margaret Wilkinson.
