Program Overview

Program Description:
Although the School in India is the first of the Middlebury Schools Abroad without a language prerequisite, language learning and cultural immersion remain at the core of the program. Students take an intensive Hindi course, so that they may have an easier time exploring and inserting themselves into their host community, and their other courses are taught in English alongside local students.

The School in India is located in Delhi and based at St. Stephen’s College and Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR), both of which are part of the larger University of Delhi. (Female students may pursue classes at either of the two colleges, while men will study at St. Stephen's.) The two colleges are world renowned, and preeminent institutions of higher education in India, with offerings in the humanities, social sciences, and physical sciences.

We encourage all students to take full advantage of their experience abroad by participating in learning experiences outside the classroom. Volunteer work and cultural activities provide students with opportunities to deepen their social immersion in Indian culture, enhance their language skills, and gain a better understanding of present-day India. Other options that facilitate student immersion include sports, cultural, and outdoor activities. Delhi provides plenty of cultural resources, and there are many clubs, sports teams and student associations that our students can join at the host college.
Setting Description:
Delhi, the political and administrative capital of India, has been continuously inhabited since the 6th century BCE, and is steeped in a long, rich, and tumultuous history. It has long been associated as a capital city to many different kingdoms and populations whose architectural and cultural influence is still an important influence on modern Delhi’s culture. With a metropolitan population of 16.7 million residents, today’s Delhi is a bustling and diverse city home to both ancient monuments - including three World Heritage sites - and a modern arts, business, and culture scene.
