Program Description:

The degree of Master of Arts in Political Science is offered by full-time and part-time study. It may be taken by course work and thesis, course work and internship, or course work only. Generally students taking the full time M.A. program fall into one of two groups: (1) those pursuing the internship option which provides students with an interest in public policy the option to gain some practical experience in the field, or (2) the thesis option for those interested in broader academic and analytical issues. Both options are one-year programs The Department of Political Science at Memorial is committed to research and to its graduate students. Faculty members’ interests touch on all of the major subfields of political science - including local politics, political theory and international relations. In particular, the Department has special strengths in: Canadian and Provincial Politics, Public Policy and Administration, International Relations and European Politics . The degree of Master of Arts in Political Science can be completed through several different program streams. Internship Stream: Our innovative internship program requires students to complete the standard course load with an emphasis on course offerings in public policy and public administration. Students then take part in a four-month paid work placement with government or a private agency. This internship gives the candidate practical “hands on” skills in politics and public administration. Thesis/Research Essay Streams: Students choosing this stream are required to complete a standard course load, including two research design and methods courses intended to help prepare them for in-depth research. The thesis or research essay is normally written following the completion of course work. Part time Studies: The MA program may also be completed on a part-time basis
