Program Description:

There are several research laboratories at the School of Pharmacy, including separate rooms for organic synthesis, radiopharmaceutical chemistry, natural products chemistry, and cell culture, in addition to advance formulation, pharmacology, and pharmacokinetics/pharmaceutical analysis labs.The School of Pharmacy provides students with the opportunity to conduct original research related to the discovery, delivery, disposition, action, toxicity and utilization of drugs.It includes disciplines that are unique to pharmacy (e.g., pharmaceutics, medicinal chemistry, physical pharmacy, pharmacokinetics/ pharmaceutical analysis, radiopharmacy, clinical pharmacy) and inter-disciplinary areas such as pharmacology, and pharmacoepidemiology. The following six areas of study are currently offered at the School of Pharmacy:1.Medicinal Chemistry; drug design and discovery of new medicinal molecules with anti-infectious and anticancer properties, 2.Pharmacokinetics/Pharmaceutical Analysis; miniaturized technology for pharmacokinetic studies and therapeutic drug monitoring 3.Pharmacology; Mechanisms of toxicity and protection in neurons,4.Targeted drug delivery, 5.Pharmacoepidemiology,6.Clinical Pharmacy; pharmacy practice and health outcome-related research Candidates for both M.Sc. Pharm. and PhD degrees are required to complete a minimum of two graduate courses (equivalent to six credit hours) in pharmacy, medicine, biochemistry, chemistry, or other relevant science programs. Depending on background and area of interest, students may be required to complete additional courses as selected by their supervisors; attend a seminar series and present a yearly seminar on their own research; and write a thesis embodying original research. All graduate students are expected to participate in inter-laboratory research seminars, journal clubs and seminars presented by visiting speakers. PhD candidates must pass a comprehensive examination consisting of written and oral components.
