Program Overview

Program Description:
Marist College is pleased to promote our innovative new semester-long study abroad program in collaboration with the University of Havana in Cuba. The program has been designed with faculty at the University of Havana to provide a focus on Caribbean Studies through coursework in the Facultades de Artes y letras (Art and Humanities) and Filosofía e historia (Social Sciences). Students will participate in a brief orientation in Miami prior to the program start. Participants then fly to Havana the next morning and continue the orientation on-site. Both the overnight stay and round trip flight to Havana are covered by the program fee.

The program will include two courses specifically designed for students on the program, covering the culture, politics, and economics of the Caribbean. The second course focuses on Cuban Cinema which provides students the opportunity to get involved with the Foundation for New Latinamerican and local filmmakers. Students will also enroll in University of Havana courses in Latin American, Caribbean and Cuban art; music; Cuban and Caribbean culture, literature and history; philosophy; and the cultural and political processes of Cuban society.

Setting Description:
Coursework based in Havana will be complemented by educational excursions attached to the signature "El Caribe" course and are included in the program fee. Potential excursion locations include: Las Terrazas - eco-village and UNESCO Reserve Cayo Jutía - tropical island off the northwest coast of Cuba Soroa - "Castle of Clouds" Trinidad - UNESCO World Heritage Site Santa Clara - Capital of Villa Clara Cienfuegos - UNESCO World Heritage Site Oriente - Capital of the Eastern Province Baracoa - Cuba's oldest city Housing in a small residencia setting with other international students and is guaranteed on the program. The residence is located within walking distance of the University. Breakfast and dinner are both included as part of the program fee. A Resident Director will be on site in Havana throughout the program to assist students with academic issues and cultural adjustment.
