Program Description:
The MSc in Gender and the Media provides a coherent programme for the research and analysis of the role of gender in the contemporary media. You will be introduced to relevant theories and asked to assess the scope and robustness of those theories in relation to case material and other empirical evidence. The programme examines such questions as how representations in the media reinforce or subvert social roles and ideologies; how the sexual division of labour impacts on working environments in the different media and influences content; the differing relations men and women have to the media; the gendered expectations producers have of their audiences; and the role of the different media in globalisation and social transformation, and the impact of these processes on relations between men and women. Compulsory courses in Gender Theories in the Modern World: an Interdisciplinary Approach; Gender and Media Representation; Methods of Research in Media and Communications I. 10-12,000 word dissertation.
