Program Overview

Program Description:
We have expertise across a broad range of areas within this multidisciplinary field, with a particular focus on social and organisational issues related to the introduction and use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Information technology is absorbing an ever-increasing proportion of the resources of organisations and governments. Consequently, there is a need for people who are educated to understand and assess the complex interactions between information technology and people. To do this it is essential to look beyond the technologies themselves and investigate the rich social and organisational contexts in which they are deployed. Our approach to the subject is founded on a healthy skepticism that takes a critical stance towards the propaganda of the ICT industries, which tends to propose each new technology as a panacea. Technology is important, of course, but we must be wary of naive technological determinism. We seek to understand the technological, organisational, social and economic factors that influence the success of new information systems. Using a variety of approaches from the social sciences, management theory and software engineering, we explore the current problems of developing and managing information systems in organisations and developing appropriate policy responses. Members of staff are active in the International Federation of Information Processing, the Association of Information Systems, British Computer Society, various United Nations, European Union and other national and international bodies. Our strong research base feeds into postgraduate teaching to produce up to date, research led courses that prepare students for careers in the information society. There are numerous opportunities for people with information technology skills with industries that supply information technology and those that use it. Research students generally move on to an academic or research career.
