Program Overview

Program Description:
Cities, Design and Urban Cultures - MA Aims of the course The course provides foundations in understanding space-making as a political act bearing social and cultural implications. Research is based on the principle of 'practice driven theory' with design as a form of knowledge production alongside a strong theoretical component. The course aims to identify and study situations of urban conflict created in the wake of radical political and cultural transformation. It focuses particularly on developing a cultural and political critique of planning practices, aiming to open an interdisciplinary discourse, but also to propose alternative planning strategies. The course recruits internationally. It is aimed at architects, planners and urban designers who are interested in engaging with the social, political and cultural dimension of space (geography, critical theory, urban studies, art history, art practice, sociology and politics), in exploring design methods as well as in testing these against theoretical reflections. City Regeneration - MA Aims of the course The aims of MA City Regeneration are: to provide a thorough knowledge of the changes taking place in the social, economic and physical structure of cities to enable you to critically reflect on theoretical understandings of the dynamics of change of cities to equip you with knowledge of the regeneration and economic development policy responses to the changes taking place in cities to enable you to critically appraise regeneration and related policy to equip you with the skills to work in partnerships and with different communities in regeneration projects to provide you with the skills to work on developing regeneration projects to help you to develop and undertake your own research, including planning, carrying out, writing up and disseminating the results of research If you are seeking a more design-based course on regeneration, please see our MA in Cities, Design and Urban Culture
