Program Overview

Program Description:
IMPRS-UFAST is a structured PhD programme which offers training opportunities in the field of ultrafast imaging with a view to exploring structural changes of atoms, molecules, condensed, biological, or warm dense matter on femtosecond time scales. The School is interdisciplinary in scope and encourages cross-disciplinary thesis research. Supervision and teaching within the School are a synergistic effort of experts from relevant fields within Physics, Biology and Chemistry. Thesis research is complemented by a programme of lectures, interactive workshops, advanced courses, and an annual retreat, and general academic and soft skills courses. The duration of the programme is 3 years. All doctoral positions within the IMPRS are fully funded. The language of the programme is English. The location of the School is o the DESY premises in Hamburg. PhD Thesis Topics: Specific research areas include theoretical and practical aspects of condensed matter and atomically resolved dynamics, fundamental light-matter interaction, accelerator-based light sources, coherent imaging, coherent controlled molecular and solid state dynamics, molecule imaging, extreme timescale spectroscopy, ultrafast optics and x-ray, and their relevance and application in Chemistry, Biology and Medicine.

Additional Program Information

Accreditation:
The International Max Planck Research School for Ultrafast Imaging and Structural Dynamics (IMPRS-UFAST) is a joint enterprise of Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY), the Max Planck Research Department for Structural Dynamics at the University of Hamburg (MPSD), the Max Planck Advanced Study Group (MP-ASG), the University of Hamburg, and European XFEL GmbH. Students will register for doctoral degree studies at the University of Hamburg who awards the PhD degree upon successful completion.
