Program Overview

Program Description:

You’ll benefit from the advanced methods of our highly professional and experienced teaching faculty of the Division of Hebrew Language Instruction. The focus is on helping you internalize the language and improve your practical usage. In class, you’ll practice the four skills that underpin language competency – reading, writing, speaking, and listening – in a communicative way. The Rothberg International School (RIS) at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem offers intensive Modern Hebrew language courses (ulpanim) during the summer and winter as well as semester-long Hebrew language courses during the academic year. We also run a center for training teachers of Hebrew as a second language.

Programs of Study

Summer Ulpan - All summer Hebrew language programs at RIS offer daily classroom instruction, in which the four skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening are practiced in a communicative attitude. Classroom instruction is reinforced with guest lectures, field trips, and cultural activities. Hebrew studies are available on six levels, ranging from elementary (Aleph) to upper-advanced (Vav). Courses are designed primarily for students enrolled in academic programs at the Hebrew University, but are also open to students who wish to learn only Hebrew (OHS), with appropriate academic background.

Biblical Hebrew - The Biblical Hebrew program offers students a unique academic experience of Biblical Hebrew study in the land where the Hebrew Bible was written. The Rothberg International School offers a summer course in the elementary level. This intensive and engaging program offers an eye-opening approach to textual and historical issues of Biblical Hebrew, while building the students' vocabulary and grammatical understanding of concrete biblical texts.

  • Advanced Biblical Hebrew

Semester Courses - Modern Hebrew language instruction with expert faculty is available at Hebrew University on a semester basis, in both the autumn and spring semesters. Courses for international students are available to you through the Division of Hebrew Language Instruction at RIS.

Winter Ulpan - The Winter Ulpan is an intensive Hebrew language course held before the opening of the spring semester. You’ll benefit from daily expert classroom instruction enhanced with field trips, cultural activities, and guest lectures. Please note that within this short ulpan, it is not possible to complete an entire level.

Hebrew Training for Teachers - The Center for Training Teachers offers a prestigious half-year program of 120 academic hours designed to train teachers of Hebrew as a second language, mainly for institutions of higher education.

Setting Description:
From the hilltop of the Mount Scopus campus, the incredible panorama of Jerusalem unfolds. Medieval maps show Jerusalem as the heart of the world. Astonishingly, it remains there: the seam line where West meets East, the First World faces the Third World, and where Judaism, Christianity, and Islam meet.
