Program Overview

Program Description:

The Department of Philosophy at Durham offers a vibrant, intellectual and social environment for postgraduate study. We have around forty to fifty postgraduate students studying here at any one time and are thus home to one of the largest philosophy postgraduate communities in the country. We do everything we can to provide a welcoming, supportive, friendly and stimulating research environment for all our students.

There are various reasons why you might want to do an MA in Philosophy. Some of our students take the course as preparation for a PhD. Some of our students are not sure whether they want to do a PhD and take the MA course in order to find out what postgraduate work in philosophy is like. Other students want just one more year of philosophical study before moving on to something else. Many of them recognise that an MA in Philosophy may significantly enhance career prospects. Our MA course is designed to accommodate both those who are committed to further postgraduate study in philosophy and those who just want one last year of study.

Philosophy MA students are required to take core module, Philosophical Research Methods, complete a dissertation and choose three further elective modules.  All modules are taught via group seminars and one-to-one tutorials. The Philosophical Research Methods module also includes seven lectures and there is a two-day conference associated with the dissertation.

International Requirements:
Applications from overseas students are always welcome. Because instruction is in English, you will need to be proficient in written and spoken English.
