Program Overview

Program Description:

The Classics and Ancient History at Durham University is one of the most vibrant Classics departments in the UK. Our academic staff specialise in a wide range of artistic, historical, literary, linguistic, cultural and philosophical aspects of the Graeco-Roman world. In the latest Research Assessment Exercise (2008) we were ranked tied third for internationally excellent research: 65 % of our research has been rated as 4*, world leading (25%) and 3*, internationally excellent (40%).We are consistently ranked amongst the top Classics departments in the UK: 5th in the 2009 Times 'Good University Guide' and 4th the Independent's 'Complete University Guide' for 2010.

As a centre of world-class research, we have a strong commitment to postgraduate provision, and welcome applications for MA and PhD work in any of the (many) research specialities represented in the Department. With one of the largest bodies of permanent staff of any UK Classics Department, we have an unusually wide range of expertise and, of course, unusually wide scope for cross-disciplinary work.

The MA in Ancient Historiography is a specialist programme geared towards preparing students for higher research in ancient historiography - partly through direct research training, and partly through modules taught by experts in their field in small-group seminars. The programme consists of two core modules (Classical Research Methods and Resources and Civil Conflict in Ancient Historiography), a dissertation, language classes (either modern or ancient) and one elective module.

International Requirements:
Proficiency in English Language to the university's required standard. Overseas candidates should demonstrate proficiency in English Language to appropriate standard.
