- Public health is about improving the health and wellbeing of the whole community. The relative failure of curative medicine to significantly reduce morbidity and mortality rates in recent years has led to an increasing emphasis on preventative measures. Public health is a major component of this preventative approach. Our postgraduate courses in public health give you the opportunity to increase your knowledge of the major principles pertaining to public health and current issues in the public health field. You will also learn how to effectively plan, implement and evaluate public health programs in a variety of settings. The courses offer a variety of topics, including environmental health, health promotion, nutrition, occupational health and safety, epidemiology and biostatistics, health administration and evaluation. In this course you will complete units covering a broad range of health issues before choosing a major in which to specialise. Your first year will be dedicated to an introduction to public health, its origins and development and the foundations of health research, health promotion planning, epidemiology and biostatistics, environmental health management and public health nutrition. In your second year you will specialise in one of the following areas: M/PgDip - applied epidemiology and biostatistics M - environmental health M/GCert - health policy and management M/GCert - nutrition M - occupational health and safety M/PgDip/GCert - Public health. Each major includes advanced, specialist coursework and an independent research project and dissertation which you will complete under the guidance of one of our highly experienced staff.
Additional Program Information
- Master - A bachelor degree or equivalent in a health-related discipline. Those with bachelor degrees in behavioural sciences, commerce and management, education, science and social science are also encouraged to apply. PgDip - a bachelor degree or equivalent, preferably in a health science field, behavioural science, education, social science or management. Those with other qualifications and expertise will be considered but may be required to complete additional bridging units which will extend the course duration. GCert - a bachelor degree or advanced diploma or equivalent. In certain cases relevant work experience may be recognised.
