Program Overview

Program Description:
The dual-degree is a 54 credit program created for students who wish to combine the practice and study of creative writing with literary scholarship. The dual-degree prepares students for a career teaching English and creative writing at the university or community college level. One of the most distinctive features of our M.F.A. program is the rich variety we encourage in our students’ writing. Our creative writing faculty write across multiple genres, including fiction (both novels and short stories), poetry, nonfiction, screenwriting, and playwriting. Many of our M.F.A. students take workshops in more than one genre. In addition, our faculty members represent a wide range of aesthetic approaches, from literary to genre fiction, from lyric poetry to the avant-garde, and from memoir to long-form investigative journalism. As a result, M.F.A. students at Chapman University have options for their thesis projects not available in most other graduate creative writing programs.
