Program Overview

Program Description:
From Rio to Rhyl, the term 'sustainability' now permeates most aspects of public and private policy discourse. The concept of sustainability has been widely embraced. It has been incorporated into policies at the international level - with, for example, agreement over Agenda 21 and the establishment of a UN Commission for Sustainable Development - in European Union policy - for example the fifth environmental action programme "Towards Sustainability" - and in UK Government strategies - notably "Sustainable Development: Opportunities for Change". A key message from all of these documents is the central role of land use planning in the achievement of sustainable development. The MSc links these themes together at both a theoretical and practical level. The overall aim of the MSc is to provide postgraduates with high-level and research-oriented training in the policies, theories and practices pertaining to the social science of sustainability and the environment. It provides the skills relevant for the creation and application of knowledge about the environment and the development of interdisciplinary social science concepts in contemporary environmental policy debates.
