Program Description:

The City and Regional Planning (CRP) Department at Cal Poly offers two master degree choices: the professional Master of City and Regional Planning (MCRP) degree is fully accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board. The MCRP/MSE degree is a joint program with the Civil Engineering Department that offers specialization in Transportation Planning. MCRP students can emphasize: urban design; environmental planning and sustainability; transportation planning; or community development.

The MCRP program is recognized with awards and high rankings and serves as a curriculum model nationally and internationally for its contributions to planning education and practice. Planetizen’s National Rankings for Graduate Planning Programs identifies Cal Poly’s MCRP program as:

• #1 in the nation for programs without a Ph.D.
• #19 overall in the nation (including programs with a Ph.D.)

Career Opportunities

Graduates from the MCRP program work in planning offices of city, regional and state agencies. Some enter the world of private consulting. And others work for non-profit and advocacy organizations. The training prepares graduates for mid-level and management positions; thus some graduates rise to principals in consulting firms, planning directors or City Managers.
