Program Overview

Program Description:
The M.Ed. TESOL program produces graduates with expertise in the field of English language teaching methods and pedagogies, curriculum development, learner psychology and English linguistics. Students will be able to develop efficient and engaging English language courses through the application of a wide variety of teaching methods and techniques; show a high rate of understanding of intercultural communicative settings such as cross-cultural teacher-student interaction; critically reflect on new teaching methodologies and judge their effectiveness in a particular foreign language classroom setting; develop language curricula and adapt existing curricula to local educational needs; identify and understand the psychology of the individual behind the learner. Learning English as a foreign language is a process which involves persistence, creativity, interaction, cultural sensitivity, and foremost variation. It is much more than the mere process of knowledge acquisition marked by a fixed starting point and a clear end. It is therefore that language instructors need to be aware of a wide range of factors that go beyond the abstract features of a language. Our philosophy is to encourage students to view language learning as the acquisition of a dynamic system that constantly changes due to its interaction between learners and the language and between learners and other factors outside the classroom. We regard the learner as the central and most important entity in this process. Our methodology reflects this perspective by focusing on engaging learners in specially designed tasks which reflect the variability of language in use and the wide ranging variety of roles and situations language learners encounter across all language skills.

Individual subjects are typically designed to carry a credit value of 3 credit units each and will run for a single semester. The fall and spring semester will last for 15 weeks and the summer semester will cover 12 weeks and each credit unit equates to 3 hours per semester week of lecture/tutorial contact hours. Therefore, 3 credits are associated with 45 hours of study and 1 credit with 15 hours of study. Extra classes will be scheduled during the summer semester to comply with the 45 hours standard per semester. A successfully completed Master’s Thesis will carry a value of 12 credits and the Independent Study Project a value of 6 credits. The resulting credit structure for the entire programme is shown in the table below.

Although large in campus size, Asian University is small in student numbers. In classes of less than 20 students, interaction is intense and studying is based on projects and cases. No chance to get a good grade for memorizing the textbook - our lecturers aim to make you understand as they do.
Setting Description:
You want to study in fresh air, surrounded by plenty of nature, in a relaxed and quiet environment, and in close interaction with your fellow students and lecturers within small groups? Welcome to Asian University! Established in 1997, Asian University is the first fully international university in Thailand. The university is located in Chon Buri province approximately 150 km from Bangkok, and a short 25 minutes drive from the beach resorts of Jomtien and Pattaya. In small classes with intense teacher-student interaction, innovative educational approaches like active learning, peer-to-peer instruction, and minimally invasive education are the rule, rather than the exception. The courses are taught in English. All lecturers were educated at western universities; about 80 percent are native speakers of English. Beyond their academic qualification, all lecturers draw from extensive practical experience. The university has all the facilities of a modern university, including dormitorie
