Syracuse University Abroad Syracuse University's Hong Kong program offers students the opportunity to study the political economies, business, and cultures of East Asia at a pivotal moment in the region's history. As Hong Kong continues to move forward as a Special Administrative Republic (SAR) of the People's Republic of China, students not only study but also participate within a political landscape and marketplace that will be as important to the 21st century as the U.S. was to the 20th.

Overview Program emphasizing liberal arts, business, and international relations. Special field seminar to Beijing, Shanghai. Located on campus of University of Hong Kong. Courses in English. Internships with multinational firms.

Setting Hong Kong, which was returned to China in 1997 after more than 150 years as a British Crown Colony, is a fascinating interweave of seeming opposites: bobbing fishing junks alongside luxury yachts; shimmering skyscrapers beside pagodas; high-tech subways and historic trams; state-of-the-art shopping complexes and alleyway market stalls. It is the place where Western and Eastern values have wed and spawned a culture, and a global marketplace whose ripples are felt around the world.

Overview AFS-USA works toward a more just and peaceful world by providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities through a global volunteer partnership.

Setting Experience an AFS program like no other! Study abroad in Hong Kong and live-as a local-in one of the most international, cosmopolitan, and dynamic cities in the world. You'll be surrounded by breathtaking views of the harbor (Hong Kong means "fragrant harbor") and the mix of East and West that creates a truly global city. The past and future contrast beautifully in Hong Kong: enormous skyscrapers are built using an ancient technique of bamboo scaffolding; herbal medicine shops abut trendy clothing boutiques; wheelbarrows are parked next to Rolls Royces; markets are open round-the-clock; and birds in cages are taken for strolls in the parks past roadside fortune tellers. When you arrive, you'll be introduced to your host family and attend a five-day orientation with basic Cantonese language training and an introduction to Chinese etiquette and culture.

Value Year and Semester:
There are two branches of study - arts or sciences. Classes are challenging, and usually conducted in Cantonese. Helping with your adjustment will be the time you spend with new friends, whether it's going to the movies, outings at the beach, or participating in sports or school clubs. Chinese society values family relationships, and you will learn a lot from your host family. Having dinner together and gathering as a family, especially on Sunday, is expected. There are also opportunities to be involved in community service to further enrich your experience. AFS Hong Kong also arranges various activities for participants.
