AFS Intercultural Programs AFS, a leader in international exchange for over 55 years, offers Community Service/Team Mission programs. Community Service projects range from environmental issues, to cultural preservation, to working with children or teaching English.

Overview Along with your volunteer experience, you'll spend the first month of your year or semester in language training to strengthen your conversational Spanish skills. You will be working in service programs in different fields, such as the environment, arts, or with social and educational organizations. Most projects are located in the cities, some are in rural areas.

Setting The cultural wealth, breathtaking Andean landscapes, and the remnants of mysterious, ancient civilizations that are thought to stretch back some 21,000 years make Bolivia one of the most exciting destinations in South America! Once part of the ancient Incan Empire, Bolivia is a fascinating mix of the indigenous culture and the Mediterranean influence brought by the Spanish explorers.

SIT Study Abroad Stretching from the tropical Amazon to the soaring Andes, Bolivia's diverse landscapes and populations offer amazing contrasts-as well as significant challenges to development. This program explores the key role played by cultural processes, identities, and resources in defining who "develops" and how.

Overview Intensive Language Study: Spanish; Culture and Development Seminar: Historical Foundations, Culture, Power, and Identity, Development Issues, Politics of Contemporary Issues, Village Visit, and Educational Excursions; Field Study Seminar; and Independent Study Project. (16 credits in total)

Setting Six weeks homestay in Cochabamba. The program features field trips to La Paz, Lake Titicaca, Tiwanaku, Santa Cruz, and other sites as feasible.

Amizade Global Service-Learning and Volunteer Programs Service-learning semester students enroll in five courses worth three credits each, to earn a total of fifteen credits during the term. Six credits are dedicated to Spanish language courses, and students will be accommodated at all levels of language learning, from introductory to advanced. The remaining three courses are International Development, Global Service-Learning, and Contemporary Bolivian Issues.

Overview Bolivia Service-Learning Semesters include long-term service placements, continuous language learning and cultural immersion, and coursework examining the structure behind the issues Bolivians face today. In the Andean city of Cochabamba students have home stays with local families, serve with local nonprofit organizations, and take classes with Bolivian students.

Setting Bolivia's third largest city, Cochabamba rests on a fertile plane in the Andes Mountains, surrounded by the breath-taking Andes Mountains, and boasts of its perfect climate with a daytime seasonal average of 72 F with no humidity. Cochabamba is a bustling city of 400,000 people, home to many beautiful plazas, fountains, churches, and the largest open-air market in the Americas, La Cancha.

Value This is one of the most affordable programs of its kind. Students often discover that they can complete 15 credits, experience a service placement, and enjoy a homestay in Cochabamba for cheaper than they would pay for tuition, room, and board on their home campuses!
