Program Overview

Program Description:
The MSc Public Management and Governance builds on LSE’s international reputation in public policy. Public management and governance is an interdisciplinary field with roots in a number of academic disciplines. A major research and teaching focus in public management is on designing organisational practices, producing and using systematic analysis within the policy process, information and communication technologies, leadership, performance measurement, design of incentives, and public accountability. The issue of public governance has become increasingly important with perceived failings of professional self-regulation, the emergence of multi-level systems of political jurisdictions and administrations and the expanded role of the private sector in delivering publicly-financed services. The MSc is designed with two full unit core courses, Foundations of Public Management and Governance, and Policy Analysis, Evaluation and Implementation; a half unit dissertation; and choice from a wide range of options offered by LSE to the value of one and half units. Core courses: foundations of public management and governance; policy analysis, evaluation and implementation; dissertation. Options to the value of one and a half units from: accountability, organisations and risk management; management accounting, decision and control; financial accounting, reporting and disclosure; advanced behavioural decision making; topics in decision analysis; system dynamics modeling; information systems for the public sector; information society; principles of privacy and data protection; basic economic concepts for european political economy; policy-making in the european union; economics of european social policy; social policy:goals and issues; many others.
