- The Department of Biosystems Science was established on the Hayama campus in 1997 and will involve both teaching and research from 1999. Research projects carried out in the Department have no a priori restriction, possibly ranging from molecules to society, but historical aspects in addition to structure and function are emphasized throughout for understanding the integrity and general principles of biological systems and for unifying diverse areas of biological research. The Department will be divided into two major groups, which study [1] structure, function and evolution of biological systems, and [2] the past, present and future of mankind.
