Have you been dreaming about studying abroad? Whether you want the travel experience, to pursue your academic and artistic passions around the world, to learn a new language, or something else entirely, studying abroad might be the opportunity of a lifetime. You could expand your horizons—literally and figuratively—learn about yourself, and have a great time while you’re at it.

But how do you pay for it? The idea of funding a semester or year abroad might seem daunting at first. But even if you’re not sure how you might afford a study abroad program, don’t count yourself out quite yet. Study abroad scholarships could be what you’re looking for to help you cover the cost of that international experience. StudyAbroad.com doesn’t want you to give up on your dream of traveling, meeting people from around the world, seeing new places and learning new things. Rather, we want to help make that dream happen. To that end, we’ve put together an annual study abroad scholarship to go towards program costs, if you apply and are selected. This year’s scholarship prize is for $1000.

How to Enter the Study Abroad Scholarships Essay Contest

Interested in the Study Abroad Scholarship? If so, you may want to get writing, because the qualified student who submits the best essay by December 31st wins. We want you to tell us all about why you want to study abroad, what inspired you to do it, and what you hope to get out of it. Tell us your story! No purchase necessary to apply – please see the Official Scholarship Rules for a complete set of rules.

Simply click "Enter Now" below, and fill out the form. Submit an essay that does not exceed 500 words telling us why you want to study abroad! Eligible applicants must be enrolled as a student in the United States. The scholarship funds will be paid directly to the winner’s study abroad program or school to go towards study abroad program costs. In order to collect the prize, the winner must be able to demonstrate enrollment in a study abroad program on or before March 31, 2019.

This annual scholarship contest closes on December 31, 2017, so make sure you get your application together before then. We can’t wait to hear from you!

Why was this scholarship created?

StudyAbroad.com aims to help connect students with the study abroad programs they’ve been looking for. We believe that international travel is an opportunity to learn, grow, and have fun. We also know it can be expensive. That’s why we created this study abroad scholarship. We want to remove some barriers, and help make going abroad a possibility for more students.

Who manages the contest and chooses the winner?

This Study Abroad Scholarships Essay Contest is managed through a partnership between StudyAbroad.com and Unigo.

How is the winner selected?

Our scholarship panel first screens each application for eligibility. Then, they evaluate each essay, and select a winner. We’re looking for essays that are submitted on time, and fully answer the prompt question in an engaging way.

When is the winner selected?

The winner will be selected and informed on or around March 31, 2018 by email. The winner will later be announced on our site.

What is the criteria for winning?

The panel of judges will choose one (1) potential winner based on his or her writing ability (25%), creativity (25%), originality (25%), and overall excellence (25%). If there is a tie, we’ve got that covered too: The potential winner will be the one with the higher score in the overall excellence category.

Who is eligible to apply?

Eligible entrants must be 18 years or older at the time of application and a student in an US college or university. They must also be a legal resident of the 50 United States and District of Columbia and able to demonstrate enrollment in a study abroad program on or before March 31, 2019.
Any current employees, officers, directors, and/or agents of StudyAbroad.com and its related companies, or members of their immediate families (defined as spouses, parents, siblings and children) and persons living at the same address, are not eligible to enter or to win. Void where prohibited.

How do I enter?

Enter by filling out the online entry form, which includes space for your essay. Email or paper applications will not be considered. Submissions must be received on or before December 31, 2017. Successful entry will be confirmed with an on-screen message, in addition to an automatically generated confirmation email. Make sure the confirmation email does not go to your spam filter. Once you get it, make sure you add the address to your contacts to make sure you get any future updates about your entry!

How many times may I enter?

Each entrant may submit one (1) application and essay per essay contest. Additionally, your essay must be previously unpublished. That includes having been submitted to previous essay contests.

How many winners will be chosen?

There will be one (1) winning essay. The winner will be awarded a $1000 scholarship to help fund their study abroad program. The essay may additionally be published on our website.

If I win, may I enter again next year?

Yes! Each entrant, regardless of whether they win, is free to submit a new essay for consideration next year, if the scholarship is offered and if they remain eligible.

How may the scholarship be used?

The winner’s scholarship is paid directly to the winner’s school or study abroad program. The scholarship might be used for program-related expenses including tuition, fees, textbooks, campus room and board, and other related expenses, depending on requirements of the program in question.
