Program Overview

Program Description:

Bond with your classmates and host family during your semester or year program as you learn not just regular academic subjects but also about South African history. Participants also have the opportunity to apply for a volunteer program- live and volunteer at a children’s home in a suburb of Cape Town, and stay on-site in dormitories. Volunteers assist the children by helping with homework, playing sports, organizing fun activities, providing care, and walking children to school. South Africa is a place of great cultural diversity with 11 official languages. As you learn about the culture of your host family and their neighbors, you'll be exposed to the richness that this variety of cultures can bring. Your stay in South Africa will form memories and friendships that can last a lifetime.

Summer program students may still experience the wide cultural diversity of South Africa. As with all YFU programs, students will live with a host family. This unique program allows you to attend three different schools in the first two weeks! Spend the following weeks visiting sights in and around Pretoria, experiencing the African wilderness in the world famous Kruger National Park and enjoying the beautiful landscapes of Mpumalanga Province!

Youth For Understanding USA's (YFU) high school study abroad program is an experience that will immerse you in the lives, languages, cultures, and communities of a real family in one or more than 40 countries around the globe. YFU is a homestay experience where you live with a carefully selected host family who has agreed to open their home and hearts to you---providing room, board, and a caring home. You'll gain a global family, make new friends and even attend a new school on academic programs.

YFU programs make a lasting, life changing impact on young people. YFU students return as young adults---more independent, competent, and confident---with a deeper understanding of their family and country. They also discover that YFU experience opens doors for many years to come, enhancing educational and professional opportunities.
