Program Overview

Program Description:

See what daily life is like in Romania. With YFU's high school abroad program, you'll live with a Romanian host family and take classes at a local high school, called Liceu or Colegiu (college-preparatory school). While there, you will take classes in one of two main fields of study: sciences or humanities. In Romania, you'll experience first-hand the country's culture as you learn about Romanian history. Nature-lovers are sure to feel right at home in Romania, with its beautiful landscapes and diverse wildlife.


A five-week summer program is available for students looking for a short, yet impactful stay in Romania. YFU Romania will organize activities for all of the YFU exchange students who chose to make Romania their home for the summer as school is not in session. Spend time joining extra curricular clubs, playing local sports, attending local fairs and events, and even volunteering in the community you live in!


Youth For Understanding USA's (YFU) high school study abroad program is an experience that will immerse you in the lives, language, cultures, and communities of a real family in one of more than 40 countries around the globe. YFU is a homestay experience where you live with a carefully selected host family who has agreed to open their home and their hearts to you---providing room, board, and a caring home. You'll gain a global family, make new friends, and even attend a new school, on a academic programs. Previous language study is not required.

YFU programs make a lasting, life-changing impact on young people. YFU students return as young adults---more independent, competent, and confident---with a deeper understanding of their family and country. They also discover that the YFU experience opens doors for many years to come, enhancing educational and professional opportunities. 

Setting Description:
Whether you want to travel across deep and dark Transylvanian forests, look for Count Dracula’s castle or go hiking and visiting throughout medieval cities, Romania is your destination! Discover with your host family all the magnificent colors, tastes, sights and smells of this Eastern European country.

Through the generosity of numerous corporations, governments, foundations and individuals, YFU awards more than $2.3 million in partial or full study abroad scholarships annually.
