Program Description:

The Program in Plant Sciences offers an interdisciplinary course of study leading to the Ph.D. degree. Research topics include the molecular genetics of flowering, the developmental biology of leaves, the physiology and molecular biology of hormone action, transposable elements, sex determination, the cellular and molecular biology of photosynthesis, signal transduction, and the evolution of plants. The Program in Plant Sciences is based in the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (MCDB), but it involves plant biologists and facilities from all areas of biology, including the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and the Departments of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry and of Geology (paleobiology), as well as collaborative interactions with the nearby Connecticut Agriculture Experiment Station. Students are encouraged to develop, with the assistance of faculty advisers, a specific program of course work, independent reading, and research that fits their individual backgrounds and interests.
