Program Overview
- Program Description:
- WorldTeach is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded by a group of Harvard students in 1986 in response to the need for educational assistance in developing countries. It also addressed a growing interest among people in the U.S. and elsewhere to serve, teach and learn as volunteers overseas. Since its inception, WorldTeach has placed thousands of volunteer educators in communities throughout Asia, Latin America, Africa, Eastern Europe and the Pacific.
WorldTeach volunteers in China Hunan Province will teach English in middle and high schools (students ages 12-18) in Changsha and other cities in Hunan Province through the provincial government. Volunteers will live in teacher apartments provided by the host school. Volunteers in the China Year program will be eligible for WorldTeach TEFL certification. Volunteers depart in early August 2013 for orientation and must commit to 11 months of volunteering. Applications are accepted on a rolling admissions basis until May 7th, 2013. The year long program requires volunteers to be between the ages of 21 and 65 by the departure date. Volunteers must also have a Bachelor's degree (in any subject) and demonstrate a desire to teach. Volunteers need not be a US citizen, but must be a native English speaker.
- Setting Description:
- Placements will generally be in pairs. Occasionally a volunteer is placed alone or a school gets more than two volunteers, but pairs are the norm. Since all volunteers are placed within Hunan province, they are relatively close to each other. It is certainly possible to visit with other volunteers with some simple planning. WorldTeach is not alone in teaching English in Hunan, so some placements may have a non-WorldTeach English teacher as well, though this is not common.
- Cost:
- The cost of the program is a $1,000 volunteer commitment plus a $1,000 fully refundable deposit. This covers pre-departure information and preparation, round-trip international airfare from a departure city to Changsha, Hunan, overseas medical and emergency insurance, 3 weeks of in-country training, periodic group conferences, 24-hour field staff support, room and board, and alumni support. Volunteers will also receive a monthly stipend of approximately $300 to over additional expenses and light
