Program Overview

Program Description:
WorldTeach is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded by a group of Harvard students in 1986 in response to the need for educational assistance in developing countries. It also addressed a growing interest among people in the U.S. and elsewhere to serve, teach and learn as volunteers overseas. Since its inception, WorldTeach has placed thousands of volunteer educators in communities throughout Asia, Latin America, Africa, Eastern Europe and the Pacific.

As a volunteer, you will be teaching English to public school students at one or more schools. Volunteers will have the opportunity to teach, co-teach, as well as help teachers in English classrooms. For example, a volunteer might agree with the teacher to teach second graders a unit about colors, co-teach in fourth grade, and help the teacher & students from other grades during the rest of the day. Most placements will involve teaching students in elementary and middle school, though it is possible that some volunteers may teach older students as well. English language skills will greatly increase their opportunities for success in their future careers. While participating in the life of your community and teaching site, you will gain insight into Chile’s culture, economy, and history.

Setting Description:
Volunteers will be living in Paihuano, a city in the Elqui Valley in Chile's 4th region. Volunteers will live either with host families selected by Fundación Educacional Oportunidad or in shared housing relatively near their school campuses. Volunteers will take buses to school each day.
Cost:
The US$3,590 volunteer commitment for the program covers pre-departure information and materials, round-trip international airfare from a designated U.S. departure city to Santiago, supplemental in-country orientation training, supplemental overseas health and emergency evacuation insurance, supplemental in-country WorldTeach field staff support, and after-service support and networking. In addition, volunteers have the option of completing additional assigments during the course of their servic
