Program Description:
Join a small non-profit elementary school located in Puerto Jimenéz on the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica. The main goal of the school is to give Costa Rican children greater opportunities through developing their critical thinking skills and creativity. Volunteers will have opportunity to assist full-time teachers in the classroom, provide private tutoring, supervise lunch and play times, participate in school events and assist with administration and maintenance tasks.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to assist full-time teachers in the classroom, provide private tutoring, supervise lunch and play times, participate in school events and assist with administration and maintenance tasks. Volunteers are encouraged to share their own ideas for lessons and activities and be active participants in the community. Hours of work are typically between 8am and 3pm, Monday to Friday.

Founded in 2007, this small non-profit elementary school is located in Puerto Jimenéz on the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica. The school teaches children between the ages of 3 and 12 and 80% of the students are from low-income families. The curriculum is bilingual (50% English and 50% Spanish) with strong environmental and interactive components. The main goal of the school is to give Costa Rican children greater opportunities to become future leaders through developing their critical thinking skills and creativity. Place and value based classes encourage a deep respect for the natural environment of the Osa Peninsula and an awareness of global cultures.
Setting Description:
Puerto Jimenez is the largest town in the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica and is home to about 1780 people. The Osa Peninsula is famous for its intense biodiversity. It contains 2.5% of the entire world’s plants and animals in an area of just 700 square miles. There are over 400 species of birds and many endangered or threatened species here including Scarlet Macaws, Tucans, Tapir, Peccary, Sloths, Monkeys and Sea Turtles. The temperature rarely drops below 27°C and heavy rain is common especially in September and October.

The cost to join the project is £420 for 2 weeks, £540 for 3 weeks, £660 for 4 weeks, £780 for 5 weeks, £900 for 6 weeks, £1020 for 7 weeks, £1140 for 8 weeks, £1260 for 9 weeks, £1380 for 10 weeks, £1500 for 11 weeks and £1620 for 12 weeks.
