Program Overview

Program Description:
Work the World elective placements include placement organisation, accommodation and meals, airport pick up, local orientation and an introduction to the hospital and your supervisor. To help your communication skills we also offer free weekly language lessons at the Work the World houses and a fantastic tailored Intensive Spanish Course in our South American destinations. Our most popular placements are within paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology and emergency medicine. For those with experience we can also arrange placements in other specialties such as anaesthetics, neonatal intensive care or HIV counselling.

Tailored placements - We determine your interests and requirements, liaising with our permanent in-country team to place you effectively. Food, accommodation and local staff? - In each of our destinations we have a safe, secure Work the World house with large comfortable bedrooms and spacious communal areas. Support network - Our online system “My Trip” gives you access to information about your hospital and supervisors. We also provide 24/7 pre-departure & in-country support. Add-on experiences? - Week long experiences complementing your placement.

We work with the largest hospital in the region, which means patients are referred from miles away. This gives you opportunity to work with a range of conditions. Government regional hospital - We work with the largest government-run healthcare institution in the Western Region. You will be able to join the professional pharmacists on ward rounds across many different departments in the hospital including Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, General Medicine and Surgery. There will be opportunity to discuss patient requirements and drug choices as well as spend time in the dispensary learning more about drug distribution and even helping make the hospitals paracetomol supplies. As drugs are expensive and scarce this is an excellent opportunity to understand more about the role of the pharmacist in a developing country and the limitations and creativity needed to treat the wide range of pathologies. There is also scope for proactive students to develop a knowledge exchange programme, presenting information and potentially undertaking small scale research or comparative studies.
Setting Description:
Our Work the World bases in Ghana, Tanzania, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Argentina provide a huge variety of flexible placement opportunities, as well as giving you access to miles of beautiful beaches, stunning rainforests, amazing wildlife, beautiful natural wonders, rich cultures and warm, friendly people. Facilities, equipment and resources available are likely to be far more basic than you are used to back home and you will experience many differences in your working day, some connected to the diseases and conditions which patients have, others that are more cultural.
