Program Overview

Program Description:
Number of ECTS: 120 Duration: 2 years Campus: Etterbeek In cooperation with: Université Libre de Bruxelles: Brussels Faculty of Engineering (in short Bruface) The main objective of this program is an in-depth understanding of the main aspects of analysis and design of all kinds of advanced load-bearing constructions, as well as of material technology. Important issues hereby are the optimalisation of the shape of the structure, the selection of the materials and the construction method in terms of mechanical properties, environmental impact, life cycle cost and sustainability. Both conventional reinforced and pre-stressed concrete or steel structures and systems in new materials (fibre reinforced, cellular, hybrids,...) are hereby considered.

Obviously, this balanced training in both analytical and numerical methods and experimental work is closely linked to scientific research in related fields and will serve as a basis for 'lifelong learning'. In particular, the education shall provide the necessary knowledge and competences to conduct scientific research in a critical and self-reliant manner or as a member of a team. In conclusion, the Master of Science in Civil Engineering provides a profound scientific background to the design and construction of all kinds of advanced load-bearing systems as well as the required competences and attitudes to become a responsible staff member with attention to and the understanding of the role of technology and the engineer in society.

Career opportunities The diversity within the civil engineering fields creates a wide choice of careers. Civil graduates work at all levels of the economy. Some work in small consulting firms, including those specializing in structural, environmental, municipal and geotechnical engineering, and some work in larger firms which encompass several branches of civil engineering. Others work for the government or have started their own businesses. Graduates in civil engineering can work all over the world, either as consultants with their own companies, as employees of large international companies, or as volunteers in developing countries.
