Program Overview

Program Description:

The joint graduate degree program in biomedical engineering offered through Virginia Tech and Wake Forest University combines the resources of VT's College of Engineering, the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Biomedical engineering integrates engineering, life sciences, mathematics, and medicine fostering the application of engineering principles to human medicine. At SBES our students are primarily engineering graduates who have an interest in the medical field, but occasionally consideration for acceptance is given to exceptional students in the physical and life sciences. Students choose a "home" campus based on their research areas of interest and/or the location of preferred faculty. Video broadcast classes link the students and faculty at both locations. Each degree is conferred jointly from both universities -- Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. The curriculum is flexible and intended to meet individual student needs; however, four major areas of concentration are available at SBES for academic and research specializations:
* Biomechanics
* Cell and Tissue Engineering
* Medical Imaging
* Medical Physics
