Program Description:
The Global Education Office and The VCU School of Mass Communications are pleased to present a two-week opportunity for participants interested in global public relations and journalism with a focus on China. This three-credit program is designed for students in the M.S. program in Strategic Public Relations, students in the M.S. program in Multimedia Journalism and talented undergraduate and graduate students interested in the practice of public relations and journalism in China. Course and credit options 3 VCU credits. Graduate students will enroll in MASC 683 or MASC 692 while undergraduate students will enroll in MASC 492 or INTL 491. Please discuss the appropriate registration options with program directors before enrollment. The Education Abroad office will enroll students in the course upon receipt of the registration. Course description All students will explore how public relations and journalism is practiced in China, with both a global and local perspective, and how major English-language media function in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. They will meet with Chinese public relations and media practitioners and will experience Chinese culture in all three cities. Depending on background and interests, students will have the opportunity to develop projects, research, multimedia news packages and other materials based on meetings with and information gathered.

Setting Description:
Participants will be housed in double-occupancy lodging at hotels and will have the occasion to visit historic and cultural sites in all three cities. The itinerary will include seminars featuring public relations and media practitioners in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. The program is led by Dr. Ernest F. Martin Jr., associate professor of public relations in the School of Mass Communications and Professor June Nicholson, director of graduate studies for the School. Both have previous experience in leading student groups traveling to China, and are familiar with Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.
