Program Description:
The Global Education Office and the VCU School of Mass Communications are pleased to offer an innovative summer study-abroad program in Ireland. Students will travel to Dublin and Galway, studying Irish newspapers, broadcast and online news media. Classroom instruction will be supplemented with tours and site visits, including the Irish broadcasting company, RTE, as well as the main newspapers, The Irish Times and The Irish Independent. Students will also develop their understanding of Irish history, since appreciating 19th and 20th century Ireland is critical to understanding contemporary Irish media, and learn about the incredible history of Irish authors and playwrights as it relates to Irish media. This is a special topics class created especially to enhance the educational opportunities for studying news media in Ireland. The readings, lectures and discussions will provide opportunities to learn about the broad Irish media system, with a special focus on news—a system that will seem familiar (because it's rooted in Great Britain's, like our own), yet different in key aspects (like how people must pay for a license to own a TV). We'll also learn a little about Irish history, which has created the media and information landscape that exists today. The assignments will provide opportunities to demonstrate that knowledge and place it into broader context. Upon completion of this course, you should be able to: Understand the main aspects of the Irish media system; Recognize and understand key players, concepts and applications of contemporary Irish news media; Place contemporary Irish media, especially news, in a broader historical context; Experience a little of Irish culture through our short visit; Appreciate and place into context the role and contribution of the Irish news media we will visit; Know and have demonstrated some best practices for travelling abroad. This course will last a total of 3 weeks. The first week will consist of online classes and assignments prior to departure. The second and third weeks will be spent in-country.

Setting Description:
Accommodations include housing in residence halls at Trinity College while in Dublin, and in bed and breakfasts while in Galway. A full Irish breakfast is included each day of the trip. The program will be led by Dr. Tim Bajkiewicz, an associate professor of broadcast journalism in the School of Mass Communications. He led two summer study tours to Ireland while on faculty at another university, in 2006 and 2008. He began traveling abroad when he did a summer study tour of Germany while an undergraduate, and he was recently a Fulbright Senior Specialist in Austria. Dr. B, as his students call him, researches in and works with multimedia journalism and TV news. He's the primary faculty member and news director for VCU InSight, Mass Comm's undergraduate student-produced, award-winning news show that airs on Richmond PBS. He also teaches in the School's Multimedia Journalism graduate program. He wonders about such things as how new and social media affects news consumption, why media lit
