Program Description:
The Global Education Office and the VCU School of World Studies, in conjunction with the Aachen University of Applied Sciences, are pleased to offer an innovative summer study abroad program in Germany. The program offers an exceptional opportunity for students to immerse themselves in German language and culture while enjoying the sights and sounds of the historically important spa town of Aachen (home of Charlemagne) in west central Germany. Participants will have a classroom-based language learning experience at the university's long-established international German language school, as well as a cultural learning experience through lectures, tours and excursions. Courses in German language and culture from beginning to advanced levels are being offered through the Aachen University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule Aachen) at its long-established international German language school (Aachener Sprachsommer). Students will earn a total of 6-7 credits, including 3-4 credits in German and 3 credits in WRLD 391 "Aspects of German Culture," taught by the Program Director as a partially online course. After a placement exam on the first day, students will be enrolled in a German language/ culture class at one of 8 different levels of proficiency. Class size is limited to 15 students, and class make-up is international. Classes take place Monday through Friday from 8:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Students will be enrolled in GRMN 102, 201, 205, 305, or 424 depending on individual background in German (no absolute beginners are permitted).

Setting Description:
Accommodations consist of a single room in a university student residence hall with access to shared kitchen facilities. Students will have the option of purchasing most of their meals from the subsidized student cafeteria for an approximate cost of $3.50 per meal. Included in the program are a Rhine river cruise and a bicycle tour through neighboring Belgium. The Program Director will organize optional afternoon activities and excursions. Aachen University also offers a variety of free-time activities, including city tours, local sightseeing, and visits to companies and museums. Weekends excursions to other cities in Germany and neighboring companies are offered as well. With its close proximity to Belgium, the Netherlands, and major German cities, Aachen provides an excellent starting point for European travel.
