- The Global Education Office, the School of World Studies, and the School of the Arts are pleased to offer a unique opportunity for students to explore Mediterranean cinema and contemporary dance in partnership with the University of Messina in Sicily. This program is available to VCU students through the generous financial contribution and support of CIMS Unime, CUMO and the city of Noto.
The program will take place in Sicily, the largest island of the Mediterranean. The location for the first four weeks (Module I) is one of the most spectacular towns of Sicily: Noto, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where students will study Italian cinema, and/or dance. Students will have a unique opportunity to explore and discover the visual, formal and conceptual elements that are common to both cinema and dance. An optional 1-credit Italian language class will be offered for free.
During the last 10 days of the program (Module II), students will have the option of travelling to Taormina to attend film screenings and discussions with international directors at the Taormina Film Festival (June 14 - 23). Students may participate in both modules or opt for just one. Module II may also be taken as a non-credit course for students who are participating in both modules.

- Setting Description:
- Students will stay in hotels in shared rooms with air conditioning. Most breakfasts are included. Lunches and dinners may be eaten in local cafes and restaurants. Students participating in Module I will spend the first 2 nights of the program in Palermo, where they will tour Palermo, Monreale, Agrigento, Selinunte, and attend an evening opera or concert. Module I students will then proceed to Noto for the majority of the program. They will attend morning and evening classes and participate in day trips and excursions throughout Sicily. Students will also have free time for independent exploration and travel. At the end of classes, students will participate in a final performance in the Greek Theatre. Students who choose to participate in Module II will then have time for a visit to Messina and Milazzo, as well as a mini cruise to the Eolian Isles, before traveling to Taormina for the film festival.
