- The Global Education Office and the Department of English at Virginia Commonwealth University are pleased to announce an innovative 2-week intensive summer study abroad opportunity in Turkey. Students will study and tour Istanbul's deep and rich cultural history, and will also have the option to read literature set in Istanbul and explore the city through this prism.

WRLD 203: Art and Culture of Istanbul (3 credits) The participant who enrolls in the program on this level will explore major historical and cultural sites in and around the city of Istanbul. Prior to departure, the participant will complete a research project and present this work to the study abroad group on location. WRLD/ENGL 391: Text and the City (3 credits): Participants enrolled in the program on this level will participate in all the WRLD 203 activities and excursions. However, their research project and grading criteria differ from the 200-level participants. ENGL 692: Independent Study: Text and the City (4 credits) In addition to fulfilling all the above requirements for the students taking the program on the 300-level, graduate students participating in this program will also be required to submit a 15-20 page research paper on the topic "Text and the City" within a month after the completion of the program (deadline: First week of August 2013).
- Setting Description:
- Students will stay for the duration of the program in a very centrally located youth hostel. The accommodation will be in co-ed dormitory rooms with 4-8 students per room and a private bath/shower and WC. Free breakfast will be provided. There will be several day excursions that will be held over the course of the program within the Istanbul Metropolitan area, which will compliment components of student coursework and will allow students to engage with residents of Istanbul in different districts. This program will be directed by Dr. Ece Aykol, an instructor of English at VCU. Dr. Aykol has lived in Istanbul for most of her life and earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees from Istanbul University. This is her second year leading this program.
