Program Overview

Program Description:
The Global Education Office and the VCU School of Mass Communications, in conjunction with Cultural Embrace, are pleased to offer an innovative summer study-abroad program in England and Ireland. This course will provide students with a cultural overview of London and Dublin with an emphasis on the advertising industries. Students will be introduced to both British and Irish architecture, art, language, culture, design, advertising and culinary experiences. INTL/MASC 491: Inside Advertising in England and Ireland (3 credits) The objective of this experiential course is to create awareness in international advertising, design, art and culture using England and Ireland as primary resources. Students will have an inside look at advertising and design agencies, local museums and the cultural heritage of both countries, earning a total of 3 credits through VCU. Classes will be held on location throughout mostly London and Dublin with day trips to surrounding areas. Students will be required to keep a project-based travel journal and other assignments may be assigned. Their grades will be based on class attendance, class participation, and keeping the blog and travel journal, to be turned in and graded once we return to the U.S. Journals will be evaluated on depth of thinking, creative expression, richness of material and overall presentation. Students will be encouraged to include original photography from the trip in their individual travel journals.

Setting Description:
Students will stay in shared rooms (2-4 students per room) in 3-star hotels. The Ireland segment of the trip will include visits to Trinity College Dublin, Guinness Storehouse, Kilkenny castle and cathedral, and Glendalough. Students will travel from Ireland to England by ferry. In England, students will visit Bristol, Bath, and Oxford on their way to London. London activities will include visits to the Tower Bridge, Millenium Bridge, St. Paul's, Covent Garden, and Westminster Abbey, and a Thames river cruise. (Please note that the above itinerary is tentative and subject to change.) The program will be led by Bridget Camden, who has led two past successful advertising programs to Amsterdam . Camden comes to VCU with over 20 years of experience in the creative visual arts and advertising /design fields. She has national and international advertising branding experience as art director on brands such as IBM, American Express, British Petroleum, Partnership For Drug Free America, He
