Program Overview

Program Description:
A primary goal of the MS School Counseling at UW-Stout is to provide a solid core of skills and practical training to enable the future counselors to work with many diverse individuals and populations with respect to age, religion, abilities, sexuality, race and cultural heritage. The program prepares students for the certification exam required by the State of Wisconsin for employment in the public schools. The program requires a sequence of experiential courses. Students gain knowledge and understanding through core classes in topic shuch as: counseling theory, group dynamics, career development, consultation, emotional and behavior problems, curriculum, and legal and ethical issues. Facilities include an on-campus clinical services center, a play therapy labe and a career and testing library.

Accreditation:
The Graduate School at UW-Stout is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges & Secondary Schools (NCA) to offer programs at the master's and education specialist levels. Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredited.
Requirements:
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited university Undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0
International Requirements:
Admission requirements include: (1) Admission to a graduate degree program and the Graduate School; (2) English Competency: Minimum required scores on the following are required: an IELTS score of 6.5, or TOEFL: 70 (iBT) 523 (paper). TOEFL scores under 79 [iBT (composite)], 550 (paper-based) will be required to take at least one advanced level language course through UW-Stout’s ESL program. Students admitted to the program whose English language skills are subsequently judged to be less than sufficient may be required to complete additional language preparation. Test scores should be sent directly to UW-Stout (school code #1740) Also required: Official copies of all post-secondary transcripts (translated into English), including proof of baccalaureate and/or highest earned degree; Undergraduae GPA of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale); Evidence of sufficient financial resources to complete a degree program; Non-refundable application fee payable to UW-Stout in U.S. funds.
