Program Overview

Program Description:
The MS in Mental Health Counseling prepares competent and ethical counselors. It teaches the principles and theories of counseling and psychotherapy, group dynamics, family systems theories, human and career development and psychological assessment. It provides the student the background necessary to understand and remediate the causes of mental illness and dysfunctional behavior. Graduates are prepared to conduct individual, group and family counseling to restore mental health and to promote human development and growth. Respect and consideration of human diversity is infused throughout the program curriculum. Formal optional concentrations are offered in: Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Counseling, Career Counseling, Child and Adolescent Counseling, Eating Disorders, Gerontological Counseling. Individuals who have previous undergraduate preparation in social work, sociology, psychology, vocational rehabilitation, child development and family life, addictions, or human services are especially well-qualified to enter the program. The Mental Health Counseling Program is an approved professional counseling program for the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credential in the state of Wisconsin.

Accreditation:
The Graduate School at UW-Stout is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools (NCA) to offer programs at the master's and education specialist levels.

International Requirements:
Admission requirements include: (1) Admission to a graduate degree program and the Graduate School; (2) English Competency: Minimum required scores on the following are required: an IELTS score of 6.5, or TOEFL: 70 (iBT) 523 (paper). TOEFL scores under 79 [iBT (composite)], 550 (paper-based) will be required to take at least one advanced level language course through UW-Stout’s ESL program. Students admitted to the program whose English language skills are subsequently judged to be less than sufficient may be required to complete additional language preparation. Test scores should be sent directly to UW-Stout (school code #1740) Also required: Official copies of all post-secondary transcripts (translated into English), including proof of baccalaureate and/or highest earned degree; Undergraduae GPA of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale); Evidence of sufficient financial resources to complete a degree program; Non-refundable application fee payable to UW-Stout in U.S. funds.
