- The Department of Statistics was established in 1977 in the School of Graduate Studies to offer graduate level instruction and to pursue research in both pure and applied statistics and probability. A separate undergraduate department within the Faculty of Arts and Science has since been formed. Prior to 1977 statistics and probability existed as disciplines within the Department of Mathematics. In addition to its graduate and undergraduate programs and its research responsibilities the Department also operates the Statistical Consulting Service at the University of Toronto.
