Program Overview

Program Description:
The Faculty of Social Work is the longest standing and one of the largest schools of social work in Canada. Students are offered an exciting and diverse program in professional social work practice. Coursework is conducted at the graduate level leading to the degree of Master of Social Work (MSW). The MSW program provides specialized education in one of four practice and policy areas: Children and their Families, Health and Mental Health, Diversity and Social Justice, or Gerontology. Students also complete field placements in community agencies, organizations and institutions, an opportunity that provides hands-on, real world experience in preparation for practice. The MSW is a two-year degree but can also be taken over one year (advanced standing) with an undergraduate social work degree.

The Ph.D. Program in the Faculty of Social Work prepares graduates to contribute to the advancement of knowledge and practice in various fields of social work. Doctoral students engage in coursework which prepares them for completion of a comprehensive paper, dissertation research and the oral defense of their thesis.
