Program Overview

Program Description:

The ESL Endorsement is a 12-credit, four course program that can be taken as part of the Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction degree plan or separately in preparation for the ESL Endorsement TExES Test.

The ESL Endorsement graduate coursework prepares you to teach children from all cultural and language backgrounds (speakers of Spanish, Vietnamese, etc.), and it is required for those teachers in the state of Texas who are working with students in grades K-12 whose first language is not English.

In Texas, the ESL endorsement is a certificate which is earned in addition to the initial teaching certificate. It is also highly marketable in the teaching field today. These ESL courses may be applied to a variety of programs including the master's degree and/or the Reading Specialist Certificate.

The courses are designed to provide you with the practical know-how essential to being effective in our multicultural and multilingual schools. Taught by professors with outstanding reputations, the ESL Endorsement program reflects the latest research about how children learn and develop in their acquisition of language. It is literacy-based, with an emphasis on real-world strategies for helping children become fluent English speakers. Each class is highly interactive, while still allowing you a great deal of freedom in pacing yourself.
