Program Overview

Program Description:
UT Southwestern provides opportunities to prepare for careers in the biomedical sciences through study and research leading to the Ph.D. degree through the Division of Basic Science. Over 250 faculty offer training in all disciplines within the biomedical fields. Our faculty includes 5 Nobel Laureates, 20 members of the National Academy of Sciences, and 20 members of the Institute of Medicine. See our website for more information about our top-ten nationally ranked graduate programs. The Division of Basic Science in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at UT Southwestern Medical Center offers ten PhD programs including: Biological Chemistry; Biomedical Engineering; Cancer Biology; Cell Regulation, Genetics and Development; Immunology; Integrative Biology; Molecular Biophysics; Molecular Microbiology; and Neuroscience. In addition, opportunity exists to further specialize with computational and systems biology, mechanisms of disease and translational science, and pharmacological sciences. Prospective students apply to the Division of Basic Science rather than to the individual graduate programs. Once accepted at UT Southwestern, first year students take a core curriculum in the first semester covering major themes in modern biology and advanced coursework during the second semester. During that first year, they also explore potential research areas by participating in 2-4 research rotations. During the first year, each student chooses a dissertation laboratory and a PhD program in which their graduate studies will be completed.
