Program Overview

Program Description:

The Master of Landscape Architecture Degree Program at the University of New Mexico is committed to providing a strong and comprehensive graduate education designed to prepare graduates to enter the profession of landscape architecture as private, public or academic practitioners; and, to promote research, inquiry and scholarship that contributes to knowledge in the discipline. The core educational mission of the program is the investigation of principles and theories of Landscape Architecture, their application as tools for critical thinking and their synthesis in design thinking, both as they apply to issues of the Southwest and in a larger world context of social, cultural, environmental and evolutionary influences on the landscape.

The Graduate program in landscape architecture has a home in the School of Architecture and Planning along with graduate programs in Architecture and Community and Regional Planning. The strong interdisciplinary relationship among the three programs in the School ensures that students are given the opportunity to engage in a rich and diverse educational experience as the foundation for their professional careers. The sublime New Mexico landscape, with its breathtaking natural beauty and its fascinating cultural history, is the setting for the program. The School maintains close interaction with professional, state, civic, neighborhood and cultural communities of the region. The relationships thus developed constitute an important aspect of the educational process for students in the Landscape Architecture Program.
