Program Overview

Program Description:

The Master of Science in Physics is designed to prepare scientists and engineers to enter various technical fields or assist them to improve their skills in their current employment. The program offers two general areas and several specialties: Applied Physics (environmental physics, ion beam analysis and modification, medical physics, instrumentation, materials science, acoustics, ultrasonics) and Computational Physics (physical acoustics, planetary science and astrophysics, geophysics, signal analysis).

The Department of Physics offers programs leading to the degree of Master of Science in two general areas and several specialties:

I. Experimental and Theoretical Physics, which lets you specialize in:

  • Acoustics
  • Cosmology
  • Environmental physics
  • General relativity
  • Ion beam analysis and modification
  • Materials science
  • Sensor development
  • Ultrasonics

II. Computational Physics, which lets you specialize in:

  • Geophysics
  • Physical Acoustics and signal processing
  • Underwater acoustics and signal processing

Our program leads to a practical stand-alone Master of Science degree, and serves as an excellent stepping-stone toward a PhD program elsewhere. Our students take advanced classes in small-class settings, which can be easier to personalize. Our students work on research projects under close mentoring and with direct feedback from their research advisers, work which often leads to publications. This experience and our students' CV-strengthening work greatly enhance their skills and chances to get jobs or be accepted in PhD programs. These programs can also assist currently employed technical personnel in improving their skills toward a more rewarding profession.
